Project Management Skills for life.
This is the main curriculum LEFT will use to develop skills to include, but not limit to: leadership, communications, planning, organization, team development, and budgeting.
Project Management Institute host an nonprofit education branch know as the Project Management Institute Education Foundation or PMIEF. This foundation offers Project Manager who would like to train the next generation of project managers/contributors in project management techniques several resources.
One resource is the, "Project Management Skills for Life." This program has been successfully implemented in several states through local Project Management Institute's chapters. Some are listed at this link. We are partnering with the chapters in North Carolina to host this program to educate high school and college students in project management and train these students through actual project tasks while: implementing, planning, executing, monitoring and closing a community service project. Thus building various skills these student will use throughout their personal and professional life. The students will also learn how to video and photography including editing as they complete tasks. Thus creating a document of their activities throughout the curriculum. A DVD will be created as part of the closing process which students could submit to their high school or college for credit toward graduation. Many college have a program titled, "Prior Learning Credit" where a student can earn up to 15 credit hours from non-traditional learning. What will students learn? first, communications, collaboration, conflict mediation, cross culture understanding and creativity throughout the curriculum. During the initiation and execution phase they will learn the art of brainstorming, problem identification and analysis, creating solutions and testing them. During the planning phase, the student will develop skill in cost analysis and budgeting, planning crating goals and objectives and delegating.
Team development is just another area these students will get to experience as they complete the curriculum based upon the books, Fundamentals of Project Management published by American Management Association and Project Management Book of Knowledge,published by PMI.. Lessons follow the template of:

Are They Really Ready TO Work? A study by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills and the Society for human Resource Management (SHRM) on the the deficiencies of students form high school and colleges.
They argue, "this study leave little doubt that improvements are needed in the readiness of new workforce entrants." The study defines two and four year college graduates have "deficient in writing in English and Written Communications" as well as "deficient in leadership." (continue below) Leadership Education for Tomorrow (LEFT) will use the "Project Management Skills for Life" curriculum with supplemental material to teach leadership and communication skills to student through teaching project management skills.
Other Curriculum offered:
1. Personal Finance Curriculum of 12 chapters to educate students in basic savings, wealth mangement, debt versus credit, budgeting, shopping, and insurance among other topics. The curriculum was designed and published by Dave Ramsey and used in high schools in all 50 states. 2. Secrets of Great Communicators The curriculum was designed and authored by Dr. Jeff Myers of the Myers Institute. A professor at Bran College in leadership. This six phase program helps develop students in the art of public speaking. 3. Youth Leadership Program Curriculum for teaching public speaking skills, leadership development and parliamentary procedures. This program has been used successfully in several Toastmaster's International chapters. It is a product created and published by Toastmaster's International and provided in N.C. at no cost. The only requirement is a local chapter has to sponsor the program. |
