To be an effective leader while supervising a project, you need to be an effective communicator. It goes back to the old adage, “No one cares about what you know, until they know that you care.” To be an effective project manager or an effective leader in general, your project team needs to know that you care. Start with gaining their trust. Only then will they invest into your vision, eagerly follow your lead, and work cohesively to get the project completed. This is the first step in initiating a positive relationship with anyone. Karl Albrecht, an author, corporate strategic and senior manager, states, “Today, leaders are being asked to provide a new kind of authority: service leadership. Gone are the days when the simple “command and control” style would work. People now expect positive personal relationships with their leaders. “ In building relationships, most people really want to be listened to, respected, and understood. When a person realizes that they are being understood, they become more receptive to understand your viewpoint. If you want to enhance relationships, then you need to listen to your project team, peers, and stakeholder’s needs. Show respect for their concerns in the work environment as well as in their personal life. Thus 90 percent of a project manager’s time is in communicating with others. As a leader, you should take the opportunity to recognize and respect everyone’s unique qualities. Leaders need to be genuine in their actions and words when recognizing or rewarding associates or project members. Sincerity and disingenuous are both easily sensed by employees and will cause conflict. A new leadership style has been dominating the leadership books for the past few years. This new style which dates back to biblical times is called servant leadership. The concept is that a leader serves those that he or she is leading. Part of the servant leadership idea is that leaders need to honor those doing the unfavorable work. Recognize those on the bottom of the totem pole. If all leaders embraced this style, what an impact this would have on the world. | Team building activities are proven to help develop team work, team collaboration through building new relationship or strengthening existing relationships. |
